My research interest is coalition dynamics, which shape how individual demands translate into collective action and policy. Coalitions exist domestically between politicians, transnationally between likeminded parties, and between likeminded individuals and countries (advocacy coalitions). But whose interests are getting represented in these coalitions and how can members balance their own interests with that of the collective? To understand this better my work examines the boundary conditions of these coalitions—when do members leave, and how does the “core” strategize to retain peripheral members? I argue that in certain strategic contexts, peripheral members can exert significant influence over the coalition. Methodologically, I combine quantitative and qualitative tools, including regression analysis, quasi-experimental and experimental methods, surveys, archival research, and formal theory.
